In addition to the range of medical and cosmetic procedures performed by our skilled dermatologists, our practice also offers a number of non-invasive skin treatments that cleanse, refresh, and rejuvenate the face and body. At our San Diego office in the La Jolla area, a trained and licensed esthetician is on staff to provide skin care treatment and information for all of our patients.

Jennifer Familo, Medical Esthetician

As our Medical Esthetician at Torrey Pines Dermatology, Jennifer Familo has been a Licensed Esthetician for over 7 years, with emphasis in Medical Esthetics.

Born in Michigan and raised in San Diego, Jenn graduated from The Poway Academy of Esthetics. After completing further studies at The International Dermal Institute, she began her career as a Medical Esthetician. In addition to knowledge and training in the field of Medical Esthetics, Jenn has an extensive background in Makeup Artistry. She has previously worked on various sets and locations as a key Makeup Artist for select clientele.

In her free time, Jenn enjoys traveling, reading, and exercising, but most of all, spending time with her husband and their two children.

Introducing our newest addition to the Medical Esthetician services provided at Torrey Pines Dermatology is the SilkPeel™ Dermalinfusion. This patented technology combines two treatments in one service, providing simultaneous exfoliation with an infusion of topical solutions, ultimately helping to infuse the products deep into the skin.

The SilkPeel™ offers a variety of topical formulations, enabling our Medical Esthetician to provide a customized treatment for each person’s unique skin care needs.

Vibraderm® (Microdermabrasion)

Vibraderm®, a new technology for microdermabrasion, is clinically proven to effectively exfoliate, produce new collagen, and stimulate new cell growth. Oxygen Facials

The oxygen facial is rapidly becoming recognized as a skin care essential. At our La Jolla office in San Diego, our esthetician provides this treatment to generate new skin cells and promote the production of collagen and elastin. Oxygen facials also act as a bactericide (for acne), reduce inflammation, hydrate, and nourish while soothing and pampering the skin.  The treatment uses medical grade oxygen to infuse hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and vitamins deep into the skin.  The patient can see an immediate reduction of lines and the restoration of volume and fullness to the skin. Oxygen facials are also routinely recommended to help soothe the skin and speed up recovery after laser treatments.

Chemical Peels – Glycolic, Vitalize & Jessner’s

We offer a wide range of Chemical Peels for all skin types and conditions. Helping to dissolve away the dead skin cells, they leave behind more balanced and refined skin. Depending on the strength, some peels will result in at least a small amount of downtime, during which the dead skin will visibly flake and peel off. Following this stage, the “new” skin will appear smoother and more even in texture and tone. These peels will help with acne, acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, and blotchy, uneven pigmentation, as well as stimulate new cell growth.

BLU-U® – Blue Light Acne Therapy

Blue light acne therapy (BLU-U®) is an FDA-approved procedure for the treatment of patients with mild to moderate acne, and can be used on the entire range of skin colors and types and colors. BLU-U® is an effective, non-invasive, pain-free treatment for acne that works by destroying the bacterias that cause it. Treatments are simple, safe, and comfortable – you simply sit with your face close to the BLU-U® light for a short amount of time, one to two times weekly for four to six weeks. After a few weeks, the BLU-U® light can control your acne or clear it up for one or more years without the use of medication or drugs.

BLU-U® Light with Levulan® – Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a two-step process. The process begins with the application of Levulan®, FDA-approved to treat actinic keratoses, to make the skin highly sensitive to light. At this point, the skin is exposed to the BLU-U® Light, which attacks actinic keratoses, sun spots and moderate to severe acne. Once treated, your skin will be red for several days, and you will need to completely avoid sunlight and bright indoor lights for 36 hours. Notable results can be seen after one treatment, but multiple treatments may be required for full effect.

Acne Facial

For acne prone skin types, a great way to clear-up and help prevent breakouts is the Acne Facial. Our Medical Esthetician, Jennifer Familo, will treat you to a gentle steam, deep cleanse and exfoliating scrub, preparing your pores for the actual treatment. Next she will perform extractions of blackheads and hard-to-treat milia, followed by a customized treatment mask. Lastly, a moisturizer and sun protection will be applied. Your skin may be mildly sensitive post-treatment, but this will subside.

European Facial

Our European Facial is customized by our Licensed Medical Esthetician for your specific skin type and condition to help you achieve your unique skin care goals. By having a facial done in a medical office, you will be able to receive the benefits of pharmaceutical grade products that are only available from a physician. The European Facial cleans and exfoliates while using a gentle steam to purify and nourish the skin. In addition, each facial includes a relaxing massage to the neck, chest and shoulders, an individualized treatment mask, moisturizer, and sun protection. After treatment, your skin will appear smoother, clearer and healthier, and will be better protected against the harsh elements of the environment.
