Skin Cancer Awareness Month

May is skin cancer awareness month. Skin cancer is a condition that is caused by sun damage and is becoming more and more prevalent every day. Skin cancer is very treatable when caught and treated early. We see and treat a wide variety of skin cancer in our office with either an excision or Mohs Surgery, depending on the case. Our goal is to educate our patients on how to take care of their skin in order to prevent skin cancers from developing. One of the easiest ways to ensure your skin is protected is to wear and reapply sunscreen every single day.

A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen should be applied 15 minutes before sun exposure 365 days of the year; yes, that even includes cloudy days! Completing daily activities such as walking the dog, taking the kids to school, and getting the mail only take up short periods of time, but add up quickly. The majority of sun damage that occurs is not from days spent at the beach, but by the added sun exposure that occurs from day to day activities over the years.

Applying a Vitamin C serum under your sunscreen can provide even more protection for your skin. UVA/UVB radiation creates harmful free radicals that over time can induce premature aging. Our Vitamin C serums, CE Ferulic and Serum 15, are antioxidants that protect against damaging free radicals while also providing anti-aging benefits. When applied daily, CE Ferulic and Serum 15 actually improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness in the skin, and brighten overall complexion.

Vitamin C serum and sunscreen are two of Dr. Richards’ “Four Core Products” that she recommends to all patients, regardless of age, gender, or skin type. It is essential to your overall health to take proper care of our body’s largest organ, the skin. Applying Vitamin C serum and sunscreen every morning should become part of your daily routine to ensure you are protecting yourself from the damage the sun can cause.

To honor skin cancer awareness month and prepare our patients for summer, we are offering 20% off all sunscreen, and 20% off our Vitamin C Serums when purchased with a sunscreen. We are also giving away Elta MD Lip Balms (while supplies last) to all patients who purchase a Vitamin C Serum and a sunscreen together. Torrey Pines Dermatology & Laser Center is proud to serve patients in the San Diego and surrounding areas, and we are able to ship products anywhere in the United States. Call our office today to take advantage of our skin cancer awareness month special, and don’t forget to wear your sunscreen!
