The Winter Skin Blues

Is your skin and hair feeling dry lately?

My skin has been dry and flakey and just not looking that great, not to mention my hair, that has static cling and feels like straw. This dry environment wreaks havoc on not only the skin and hair but the eyes and skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.  Dryness also worsens with age, even without the external influence of the weather. We all know the reasons why it’s dry, the usual low humidity, winds and all the heaters going full blast but what really works to combat the problem.  Here are some suggestions that will help us all overcome the dryness of winter. Take short, warm, not hot showers (even if tempted to warm up) using a creamy cleanser instead of a bar soap and after, slather on a rich moisturizer to lock in moisture. Sleep with gloves and socks over moisturized feet and hands. For your hair, the best tip is to condition your hair before shampooing. Coat your hair with a conditioner for up to an hour before you wash 1-2 times per week and that will help keep the static at bay.  For those who suffer with dry eye, keep some artificial tears handy to ease that scratchy feeling. Last but not least, a humidifier will make a big difference overall in the moisture levels in your house.

Here at Torrey Pines Dermatology, we have a great selection of skincare products that will help make your skin feel soft and moisturized so come by and we can help you!

SCAR TREATMENT…ESTHETICALLY SPEAKING

Many patients are burdened with scars occurring in all parts of their bodies from a variety of sources: following C-sections or surgery, burns, injuries and acne. At Torrey Pines Dermatology we now have a variety of very effective non-surgical methods to erase scars thanks to the rapid advances in non-invasive, esthetic medicine (lasers, fillers and injections) over the last decade.

Laser therapy:

We use a variety of different lasers to treat different aspects of scar tissue. The V-Beam is our vascular laser and is used primarily to target red scars and to help return the color of the scar to normal flesh-tone. Our resurfacing laser, the Active –FX, is used to help pare down built up scar tissue and to allow it to blend in better with surrounding skin. We also use our Light Sheer laser hair removal system to help eliminate hair follicles within scar tissue that can act as foreign bodies and cause the scar to continue to be raised. Once these foreign body hairs are eliminated the scar naturally flattens down. Our IPL system is also used for a variety of discolored scars to help them return to normal skin tone. The Deep FX laser is used to treat both acne scars and burn scars at a deeper level and help the body to restore normal collagen in place of scar tissue.

Fillers:

Our newest filler, Bellafill, is specifically used to fill in the pock marks many people get from acne scars. In addition we can use it as a more permanent way to fill in “atrophic” or indented scars on the skin. We also used a variety of lighter fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm to fill in more superficial indented scars.

Injections:

Since scar tissue comes from overproduction of rigid collagen, most injections aim to eliminate this excessive collagen build up and the associated inflammation in the scar. Recently studies have shown that a combination of a chemotherapy agent called 5 F-U (5-fluorouracil) and a steroid called Kenalog is much more effective in flattening down “hypertrophic” (built-up scar tissue) or “keloid” (overgrown scar tissue) scars. In addition the combination of these two agents returns scar tissue to its normal color faster.

With this many cutting-edge options for treating scar tissue at Torrey Pines Dermatology, we are sure we can customize a treatment regimen for every patient with a bothersome scar.

Men And Their Looks

More and more men are having cosmetic treatments done these days and why not?  Men are just as interested in keeping up their looks as women and rightfully so.  Why shouldn’t a man have treatments like Botox to keep lines at bay, or have a series of IPL(Intense Pulse Light treatments) to clean up past sun damage on the skin? What about acne scarring?  Let’s face it, the job market is competitive and keeping up appearances is just as important as what you know.  So when it comes to looking like yourself, but better…why not give it a try?

Let’s start with the basics. Skin Care and sunscreen is the most important thing that a man can do on a daily basis to improve the skin.  The products that we retail have been hand-picked for a reason…they work! Unlike over the counter products, our skin care and sunscreen products are medical grade which means, more effective without the elaborate packaging that will cost you extra. If I told you how easy it would be to reduce lines on your forehead, look less tired, and look like a younger version of you- would you take my advice?  All of these issues can be taken care of within a ten minute appointment.  You’re in, you’re out, and with about a week you are looking great!  Botox is the secret and men love it because it’s so easy, quick and can take years off your face. Literally!

So you surf, hike, bike and do all the fun things men do…right?  Eventually the sun exposure starts to show on your skin but you don’t have to live with it. Really! There’s a non-invasive laser treatment called IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) that can clean up all those spots that show the world your age. It’s a quick thirty minute treatment and does not require you to take any time off of work.  Within about a week you have less brown and red age spots and your skin looks like it did years ago, without giving up all your sun loving activities.

I bet you never imagined men’s treatments were so simple, yet effective enough to make you look great without anyone knowing you had anything done. This is the year to start looking younger! Call for a short consultation on the possibilities available and check out the Men’s Special below.
