Valentine’s day traditionally focuses on gift-giving and love for your significant other, however, the holiday’s history is based on centuries-old festivals celebrating the coming of spring. Yes, those celebrations also focused on fertility rights and on the paring of men and women, which is where today’s Valentine’s day gets its chocolate, flowery love bias. That being said, the celebration of the coming of spring includes essential topics such as rejuvenation, renewal, health, and growth. With longer days and the promise of summer, we should look at our own health and wellbeing and our loved ones at the same time.
Health is a choice. We can let those extra post-holiday pounds remain, or we can choose to actively lose them through diet and exercise. Same with our skin. We can make a conscious effort every day to put our sunscreen on, or we can put our health at risk. Just like brushing our teeth and shaving every day, if we make a concerted effort to apply sunscreen as part of our daily routine, we will benefit.
Studies have shown that patients with excess sun damage in the form of early precancers and sallow, inelastic skin can improve their skin texture and elasticity simply by wearing sunscreen for one month or more. An active, conscientious effort on each person’s part can actually turn back the hands of time and allow the skin to become healthier again naturally.
To speed the process even more, we need to boost our sunscreen by wearing an antioxidant in the form of Vitamin C each morning which increases sunscreen’s power by a factor of 4! In addition, by using one or more versions of Retin-A, Reitinol or “tretinoin” nightly, we are actively removing the signs of sun damage in our skin. Who knew that skin care could be so impactful and so easy?
