You may feel overwhelmed by all of the tests and screenings that you are supposed to have in order to monitor your health. There are colonoscopies, mammograms, prostate exams and cholesterol screenings that could be looming ahead. Add a skin cancer screening to the list. Like all other preventative tests, the main goal is to make sure you are healthy and catch anything that could be a concern. Don’t ignore your skin. The skin is the largest organ. A simple skin cancer screening could save your life.

Why Get Screened for Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. It’s caused by exposure to the sun, and the damage could have started from childhood. Even if you are diligent about taking care of your skin as an adult, you may not have been so cautious in your youth. Those sunburns, tanning sessions and days spent under the sun at peak hours could lead to problems down the line. By getting screened for skin cancer, you can pinpoint any problems.

Nip Minor Issues in the Bud

Skin cancer often begins as a small, isolated spot. There may be a mole that has changed shape or color on your skin. You may have a tiny sore that will not heal. When you go for a skin cancer screening, these small issues can be detected and treated immediately. You may be able to do something as simple as apply a cream to get rid of your skin cancer. Other treatments may include freezing the cancer away, removing it with a laser or using radiation. You don’t want to let a small problem turn into something major. When left untreated, skin cancer can disfigure you. Worse yet, it can spread throughout your body and threaten your life.

Be Aware of Your Skin

Pay close attention to your skin. If you notice anything that seems off or that is different, schedule a skin cancer screening. When you have changes in your skin or spots that are no longer symmetrical, you could be looking at skin cancer. Basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer can be easily treated. Melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, is more complicated. Regardless of any type of skin cancer that you may have, you want to address any problems as soon as possible.

Know Your Health History

If you are fair-skinned or if you have family members with skin cancer, you are at a greater risk of getting skin cancer. The best thing that you can do is take care of your skin by wearing sunscreen and sun protective clothing on a regular basis. Check your skin. You can ask a family member or your partner to help you with areas that you can’t see. The back is one of the greatest areas of concern.
