The Winter Skin Blues

Is your skin and hair feeling dry lately?

My skin has been dry and flakey and just not looking that great, not to mention my hair, that has static cling and feels like straw. This dry environment wreaks havoc on not only the skin and hair but the eyes and skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.  Dryness also worsens with age, even without the external influence of the weather. We all know the reasons why it’s dry, the usual low humidity, winds and all the heaters going full blast but what really works to combat the problem.  Here are some suggestions that will help us all overcome the dryness of winter. Take short, warm, not hot showers (even if tempted to warm up) using a creamy cleanser instead of a bar soap and after, slather on a rich moisturizer to lock in moisture. Sleep with gloves and socks over moisturized feet and hands. For your hair, the best tip is to condition your hair before shampooing. Coat your hair with a conditioner for up to an hour before you wash 1-2 times per week and that will help keep the static at bay.  For those who suffer with dry eye, keep some artificial tears handy to ease that scratchy feeling. Last but not least, a humidifier will make a big difference overall in the moisture levels in your house.

Here at Torrey Pines Dermatology, we have a great selection of skincare products that will help make your skin feel soft and moisturized so come by and we can help you!
